November 30

Today we started our next unit. We talked about the different groups of people who settled the west after the Civil War. We started class by answering the following question:

What different cultures exist in the United States today? Do they ever come into conflict? Give at least one example.

You should have a paragraph response to this prompt in your folder.

We then worked in groups to learn about:
Wild West Cowboys
Cattle Ranchers
Farmers
Railroad Workers
Alaskans
Miners

Fill in the worksheet using either a book or a friends.

November 9

Today we learned about the events that lead to the Civil War. Go over the Leading to Civil War ppt if gone and attend intervention in U-16.

Tody we took a test. If you missed class, you can make up your test in the testing center on Monday.

Nov. 3

We spent today preparing for the test. I handed out a test review sheet. If you complete this and turn it in with your folder, you can get 5 extra points on your test. Then we played a test review game as a class.

Nov. 1

Today we finished our flip books and then learned about the reform movements of the 1850s. Go through the reform ppt.

October 28

Today we made a flip book about the Industrial and Transportation Revolutions. If you missed this class, come in after school on Thursday, Nov. 4th.

October 26

Today we learned about manifest destiny and the westward movement in the United States in the mid 1800s. Under assignments, complete the manifest destiny questions, as well as the two U.S. maps.

Today we went through our presentations. If you missed this day, then use the U.S. history book to answer the questions on the pink worksheet from the day before.

October 20th

Today in class we were put into groups of 2 or 3 students and assigned one of 9 people from 1800-1845. Each group had to answer specific questions about the individual and then create a campaign for that person, including a speech, poster, and song. These will be presented in class next time. The assignment instructions are posted, as well as the handout to fill out under Campaign project.

October 18th

Today we learned about the presidency of John Adams. In your folder, define the following events in your own words. If you missed class you can either come in at lunch and use the text book, or use the internet.
Jay's Treaty
XYZ Affiar
Alien and Sedition Acts
Kentucky and Virginia Resolutions

We then did skits to illustrate these ideas.

October 12

Today we learned about Washington's presidency. We filled out a handout as we went through the lecture and then watched a short film about Hamilton's Duel. Look at Washington ppt and fill out Washington handout.

Monday, October 11, 2010

October 8

Today was our Unit 2 test: The Story of Independence. If you missed this test, come and talk to Mrs. Rockwood. You must have an excused absence in order to make up the test.

October 6

Today we learned about Ratification. We identified 3 arguments for the Federalists and 3 for the Anti-federalists (the end of ARticles ppt). Then we spent the remainder of the period during a test review as a class.

October 4th

Today we learned about the 4 main issues at the Constitutional Convention and talked about how they were resolved. Look at Constitutional Convention ppt and finish filling out the back of the Articles handout.

September 30

Today we had our debate and then learned about the end of the war and the first government created in America under the Articles of Confederation. Go over Articles ppt and fill out the corresponding handout.

Sept. 28

Today we talked about the key battles of the Revolutionary War, the strenghts and weaknesses of the armies and then the different arguments of the Loyalists and Patriots. We ended by prepping for a debate next time between the Loyalists and Patriots.

September 24th

Today we talked about the Causes of the Revolution. We talked about the French and INdian War as a group and then split into groups to do each of the other main events. Go over Cause of Rev. ppt and fill out corresponding worksheet.

Today we finished the books, talked about the Enlightenment and the Great Awakening and worked on a test review for the test next time. Make sure you bring your folders ready to turn in.

Today we read each others' books and filled out a handout as we did. Make sure you know a little bit about each colony. If you were not in class, get the handout from Mrs. Rockwood and use a neighbors to learn the information.

Today we worked on our books a little more and then watched a short clip about slavery.

Today we finished working on our children's books. These need to be completed for class next time. We will not be returning to the library or the computer lab. Be ready to present in class.

Today we started a project to learn about the Original 13 Colonies. In groups we will be writing and illustrating our own children's books. See the instructions under assignments if you were gone.

Today was our gym day! We learned specific things we could do to improve cardiovascular endurance, flexibility, core strength, and muscular strength.

Sept. 3rd

Today we learned about the Pilgrims and the Puritans. We read the Mayflower Compact and discussed the different communities that were set up. We broke into groups for our project next time about the original 13 colonies. If you haven't commented on the blog yet, make a comment on the end of this post. Today we talked about Jamestown and the colonists experience in Virginia. We also finished our COlumbus debate and had a quiz over the material from last class. Today we wrote a paragraph answering the question: What is an American? In groups we then transferred those answers onto a picture of an American. We took a states test and then went over the disclosure document.
